Cafeteria Offerings this Week
The annual elementary Lego Show was a big hit this year! There were 93 student participants, whether as teams or individuals. Door prizes were awarded to pre-K students Maximum Warriner and Antoni Anzures Reffitt and second grade student Cael Gemmel. Much thanks goes to Laura Buisch, for starting and organizing the Lego Show through the PTSO! After running the event for many years, she will hand the event over to the Student Council, who will keep the tradition going.

Thank you to local author Kevin Kurtz, who recently visited Arkport elementary to speak to students about the writing process and to read his book, “A Day in the Salt Marsh.” And thank you to Blue Jay Reading program leader Mrs. Cassie Kowalcyk for coordinating the visit. Blue Jay Reading is running the spring reading challenge. Elementary students have been challenged to read 100,000 minutes to increase their reading fluency. If they reach their goal, the can select a consequence for Mrs. Smith. Rumor has it that a slime dump or an overnight on the roof might be in her future!

Recently the Yorkers group had the amazing opportunity and honor to meet a WWII and Korean War veteran, Richard “Dick” Bondi. He shared his experience on a U.S. submarine, from eating and sleeping to close calls and lost friends. The students asked insightful questions and were on the edge of their seats. The Yorkers are a revived history group composed of sixth grade students; they have dedicated this year to learning about the history of our school, our town, our state and country. Richard Bondi was an inspiration to this group of Arkport students!

Dr. Seuss said “you’re never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child,” and he was right! To celebrate Read Across America Week, which kicked off on Dr. Seuss’ birthday, middle and high school students connected with elementary students by reading to them. It was a great way to strengthen the sense of community in our school!

Last week, the Culinary team hosted Justin Krezmer who ran a smoothie taste test. Students sampled “food court,” which is an orange cream flavor, and “grandma’s apple pie.” Both flavors of these healthy smoothies were delicious but “grandma’s apple pie” was the favorite!

Sebastian Carroll and Rayhan Sayeed had their submissions accepted to the Start Here invitational HS MS art exhibition held by the RIT College of Art and Design. Sebastian’s (grade 11) pencil on paper drawing is his own design, which he has been working on intermittently for two years. Rayhan (grade 10) taught himself to crochet during the COVID-19 lockdown and crafted the cardigan pictured here. The Start Here exhibition features just 200 pieces of student artwork selected by middle and high school teachers in New York state; the artwork was displayed at the Bevier Gallery on campus. Congratulations to Sebastian and Rayhan!
