On Tuesday, May 19, voters in the Arkport Central School District will decide on a proposed $15,390,433 budget for the 2026-27 school year. The plan represents a $342,090 decrease in spending compared to the current year and reflects the district’s ongoing commitment to maintaining student programs despite continued financial pressures.

If approved, the proposed budget would result in a 1.89% increase to the tax levy, below the district’s allowable limit under New York’s tax cap legislation. As a result, the proposal requires a simple majority of voters (50% plus one) to pass.

Voting will take place in the Arkport Small Gymnasium from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 19.

The district is experiencing a decline in revenue, largely attributable to reductions in appropriated fund balance, building aid, BOCES aid, and state aid, all of which are contributing to a tightening fiscal outlook.

While revenues are declining, the district is simultaneously facing escalating expenses across several critical areas. The costs of fuel, electricity, and employee health insurance have risen dramatically in recent years, increases that are largely beyond the district's control. These costs are essential to keeping our schools operating safely and our staff properly supported.

“Our goal is to continue offering a high‑quality educational experience and meaningful opportunities for students,” said Superintendent Peter Reynolds. “We are also committed to making sound strategic financial decisions that set us up not only for next year's budget, but that help us prepare for budgets multiple years down the road. This means exploring ways to reduce expenses, defer costs through collaborative relationships with community partners, and finding ways to generate revenue.”

In addition to the proposed budget, voters will consider two separate propositions on the ballot:

- Bus Purchase: Authorization to purchase two 66-passenger diesel buses and one passenger vehicle for a cost not to exceed $450,000.

- Library Levy: Approval of a $49,342 levy to support the Arkport Public Library’s 2026-27 budget.

- Voters will also elect one member to the Arkport Board of Education and one trustee to the Arkport Public Library Board.

The proposed budget sustains the district's commitment to strong academic programs, comprehensive student support, and well-maintained facilities, giving every Arkport student the tools and environment they need to succeed.
