A committee of stakeholders recently developed a cellphone policy for the District that was approved on June 11 by the Board of Education. The committee worked collaboratively to create a policy that supports student learning, encourages responsible technology use, and promotes a positive school environment.
The new policy will be implemented at the start of the school year and reflects a shared commitment to minimizing distractions while fostering academic success and well-being.
Any device (smartphones, smartwatches, earbuds) that can connect to the internet will be stored in the Yondr pouch for the duration of the school day, from 7:55 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Pouches for students in grades 5 and 6 will remain in their lockers. Students in grades 7-12 will be responsible for their pouches throughout the day.
Yondr pouches are lockable, neoprene pouches. For more information, click here.
Students in grades PK–6 are still not permitted to use personal electronic devices at any time during the school day. While students in grades 5 and 6 tend to bring devices more frequently, they are still expected to keep them powered off and secured in their pouches during the day. All elementary students are strongly encouraged to leave devices at home.
Students will be more academically and socially engaged and hopefully that will outweigh the challenges that come along with the new policy.
