Merger vote moved to Tuesday, Nov. 13
Oct. 22, 2018 -- On Tuesday, Nov. 13, residents in both the Arkport Central School District and the Canaseraga Central School District will vote on whether to merge the two districts into one.
The approval of the Oct. 9 advisory referendum or “straw vote” was sent to the State Education Commissioner, who authorized a final vote, known as a statutory, or binding, to be held on Tuesday, Nov. 13.
The original date proposed by the State Education Dept., Monday, Nov. 12, was moved to the next day (Nov. 13) following the discovery that the vote could not coincide with an observed federal holiday.
School is not in session on Monday, Nov. 12, in observance of Veterans Day.
If voters approve the final referendum, the merger would become official and the Arkport-Canaseraga Central School District would be created on July 1, 2019.
Arkport residents are invited to learn more about the referendum at an information session at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 6 at the school. Canaseraga residents are invited to attend an information session in their district at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8. Community members are welcome at either meeting.
The possibility of combining Arkport and Canaseraga has been under discussion in both school districts since May 2016. The final merger study report was submitted to both boards of education in June, and the New York State Education Department approved the report the following month.
Polls are open from 11 a.m. - 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 13.
